Vastu for Kitchen: Best Direction, Stove, Sink and Fridge

Best directions

• South-east: the traditional fire (Agni) corner and the first choice.
• North-west: the accepted alternative when the south-east is not possible.

Directions and places to avoid

• North-east: kept for the pooja room and water.
• The centre of the house (Brahmasthan).
• Directly above or below a pooja room or toilet, or sharing a wall with a toilet where you can avoid it.
• Facing the main door straight on.

Inside the room

• Stove on the south-east part of the counter, so the cook faces east.
• Sink and water filter toward the north-east part of the kitchen, away from the stove.
• Fridge in the south-west, west or north-west.
• Heavy storage and lofts on the south and west walls.
• Windows on the east, and the exhaust fan on the east or south wall.

Practical sizes

• A standard Indian kitchen is about 100 sq ft, for example 8 × 12 ft or 10 × 10 ft.
• A single straight counter works from about 7 ft wide; an L-shaped counter with room to stand needs 9–10 ft.
• A utility or wash area beside the kitchen keeps washing and drying out of the cooking space.
