G+1 Duplex House Plans: What Goes on Each Floor
By the VARAIPADAM team · Updated 14 October 2026
Quick answer: In a typical Indian G+1 duplex, the ground floor holds the hall, dining, kitchen, pooja room, a common toilet and often a bedroom for elders, and the first floor holds the other bedrooms with their toilets and a family lounge or balcony. The staircase goes in the south, west or south-west.
Ground floor
- Sit-out or verandah and the main door on the road side.
- Hall (living room), dining and kitchen, with a utility or wash area behind the kitchen.
- Pooja room in the north-east.
- A bedroom with a toilet for elders or guests, so they need not climb stairs.
- Car parking in front, if the plot allows.
First floor
- Master bedroom in the south-west, with an attached toilet.
- Children's bedrooms, a family lounge or study, and a balcony.
- An open terrace or a utility area for drying clothes.
Staircase and structure
- A dog-leg staircase takes about 64 sq ft on each floor. Put it in the south, west or south-west, climbing clockwise, and never in the north-east or the centre.
- Stack toilets and kitchens above each other so the plumbing runs straight down.
- Line up walls and columns between floors; the structure must be designed by a licensed engineer.
When G+1 makes sense
When your rooms will not fit on one floor after setbacks, G+1 roughly halves the area each floor needs, plus the staircase. It also keeps more of the plot open for parking and a garden. VARAIPADAM's fit check tells you how full your rooms make each floor before it plans.
Questions people ask
What is a G+1 house?
A house with a ground floor and one floor above it, joined by an internal staircase. In India it is often called a duplex house.
Should the master bedroom be on the ground floor or the first floor?
Vastu prefers the south-west of the top floor. Many families put the elders' bedroom on the ground floor and the master bedroom upstairs.
How much space does a staircase need?
About 64 sq ft on each floor for a dog-leg stair with a half landing.
Is a 30×40 plot enough for a G+1 duplex?
Yes. A 3BHK G+1 with the hall, kitchen, dining and pooja room downstairs and bedrooms upstairs fits a 30 × 40 ft footprint comfortably.
