Vastu for Master Bedroom: Direction, Bed Position and Toilet

By the VARAIPADAM team · Updated 14 October 2026

Quick answer: The master bedroom goes in the south-west corner of the house; in a G+1 home, the south-west of the top floor. Place the bed with your head toward the south (or the west), and keep the attached toilet in the west or north-west part of the room.

Best directions

  • South-west: the heaviest, most stable corner, traditionally for the head of the family.
  • South or west: good second choices.

Directions and places to avoid

  • North-east: kept for the pooja room; a bedroom there is not advised for the couple.
  • South-east: the fire corner, linked with restlessness in a bedroom.
  • The centre of the house.

Inside the room

  • Bed against the south or west wall, so you sleep with your head toward the south or west, never the north.
  • Wardrobes and heavy furniture on the south and west walls.
  • Attached toilet in the west or north-west part of the room.
  • No mirror facing the bed.
  • Windows on the north or east for morning light.

Practical sizes

  • A standard Indian master bedroom is about 168 sq ft, for example 12 × 14 ft; compact ones about 120 sq ft (10 × 12 ft).
  • At least 11–12 ft on one side fits a king-size cot with walking space on both sides.
  • An attached toilet needs about 5 × 8 ft; 4 × 7 ft is the least for a shower.

Check it on your own plan

VARAIPADAM places the pooja room, kitchen and master bedroom by their Vastu zones and shows, for each of its five plans, which of them sit in their zone. Move any room and the check updates.

Vastu guidance here is general and traditional. If it matters to your family, confirm the final plan with a Vastu practitioner, and have a licensed engineer check the structure.

Questions people ask

Which direction should the head be while sleeping?

South is best, and west is also good. Traditional Vastu says not to sleep with your head toward the north.

Can the master bedroom be in the north-east?

It is not advised for the couple. The north-east suits the pooja room or a study; children's bedrooms do well in the east or north.

Where should the attached toilet be in the master bedroom?

In the west or north-west part of the room, never in its north-east corner.

Where should the master bedroom be in a duplex?

In the south-west of the first (top) floor. Many families keep a ground-floor bedroom for elders.
