Vastu for Toilet and Bathroom: Direction and Placement
By the VARAIPADAM team · Updated 14 October 2026
Quick answer: Toilets go in the west or north-west of the house, or the south of the west side. Never put a toilet in the north-east or the centre of the house, and keep it away from the pooja room and the kitchen.
Best directions
- North-west: the first choice.
- West, or the west part of the south side: good choices.
Directions and places to avoid
- North-east: never, as it is the most sacred zone.
- The centre of the house (Brahmasthan).
- The south-west corner, kept for the master bedroom.
- Directly above or below the pooja room or kitchen, or sharing a wall with them.
Inside the room
- Place the toilet seat so you face north or south while using it.
- Keep the shower or bathing area toward the east or north of the room, and the WC toward the west or south.
- Give every toilet a window or an exhaust fan to the outside.
- Slope the floor so water drains toward the north or east corner.
Practical sizes
- A standard toilet with a shower is about 40 sq ft, for example 5 × 8 ft; the least that works is about 4 × 7 ft.
- Indian and western WCs need about the same space; a wet and dry area split needs about 5 ft of width.
- In a G+1 home, stack the upstairs toilets above the ground-floor ones so the plumbing runs straight down.
Check it on your own plan
VARAIPADAM places the pooja room, kitchen and master bedroom by their Vastu zones and shows, for each of its five plans, which of them sit in their zone. Move any room and the check updates.
Vastu guidance here is general and traditional. If it matters to your family, confirm the final plan with a Vastu practitioner, and have a licensed engineer check the structure.
